Rock's Tucker joins Browns
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cory Tucker is getting another chance.
Released by the Green Bay Packers in June, the Slippery Rock University graduate and former SRU offensive lineman has signed with the Cleveland Browns.
The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Tucker reported to Browns training camp in Berea, Ohio, on Monday. He becomes the second former Rock offensive lineman currently on a 90-man NFL roster, joining veteran guard Brandon Fusco of the Minnesota Vikings.
Tucker was signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent following a tryout session with the team in early May. But he was released prior to training camp.
“Cory wasn’t really given a chance in Green Bay,” SRU head coach Shawn Lutz said. “He brings athleticism to the table. He may not be as big as most NFL teams like, but Cory is an extremely intelligent player.
“He could pick up on any position along the offensive line and that can only help him.”
A South Park native, Tucker anchored a Rock offensive line that led the most prolific scoring offense in all of NCAA Division II last fall. SRU led the nation with an average of 45.2 points per game and 351 first downs. SRU’s average of 490.3 yards per game was fifth-most in the country.
SRU’s offense shattered numerous records last season, including 3,608 rushing yards, 46 rushing touchdowns, 6,864 total yards, 633 points and 87 touchdowns.
“We’ve stayed in touch ever since the end of last season,” SRU offensive line coach and former Pittsburgh Steeler lineman Chris Conrad said. “Cory has gotten stronger since he left here. His work ethic is off the charts.
“He works his tail off. I’m thrilled he’s getting another chance.”
During his tryout with the Browns, Tucker primarily snapped the football.
“I know they’re looking at him at center and guard,” Conrad said. “He can play either position. He’s versatile enough.
“Even if he just makes the practice squad, it’s a good thing. Ultimately, you want to make a team’s roster and a practice squad spot extends that possibility, whether it be with the Browns or somebody else.”
Tucker was a finalist for the Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award and finished third overall in the voting. He was honored by six different organizations as an All-American and started 48 consecutive games at right tackle for The Rock.
“I’m very thankful for the Browns organization for giving me this opportunity and I can’t wait to get up there and get in camp,” Tucker said in a released statement. “All I’ve ever asked for was a chance to prove myself and this is another opportunity to do that.”
