Houck stays hot

BlueSox slugger drives in winning run for Butler

Shayne Houck has been coming up with clutch hits all season for the Butler BlueSox.

Wednesday night was no different.

The third baseman drilled a run-scoring triple to centerfield in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-all tie in Butler’s 3-1 victory over Richmond (Ind.) at Pullman Park.

Houck, who was named the Prospect League’s Player of the Week last week, is now hitting .422 and has hit safely in 11 of 12 games this season.

“I’m just seeing the ball really well right now,” said Houck. “I’m getting good pitches to hit and not missing them.”

Matt Berezo walked to lead off the eighth inning before scoring on Houck’s first triple of the season.

“When a guy’s hot, you just hope he can smoke one in a situation like that and he did,” Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski said of Houck.

Houck came home for a 3-1 lead when Jacob Reese reached on a two-out fielding error later in the eighth.

The BlueSox received strong performances from all three of their pitchers.

Starter Devon Davis allowed just one run on five hits, striking out eight and walking three in seven innings of work.

Wes Rich, the eventual winning pitcher, threw a scoreless eighth with a pair of strikeouts. Brian Thompson managed a 1-2-3 ninth frame for his first save.

“All three of our pitchers did a great job of just coming in and throwing strikes,” said Rebyanski. “We wanted them to challenge the hitters and they did.”

The BlueSox (5-7) scored first in the bottom of the third inning.

Evan Oswald singled with one out, moved to second on Bret Basilone’s groundout and to third on Stephen Vranka’s infield single.

Richmond then committed the second of its three errors, as Oswald trotted home after an errant throw from the catcher.

It was one of the reasons why Richmond starting pitcher Jackson Baker was charged with a loss despite a great outing.

The righthander allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in eight innings. He struck out nine and walked two.

“He pitched his butt off tonight,” said Richmond manager Tyler Lairson of Baker. “We didn’t score runs when we had the opportunity and failed to make some plays in the field.”

The River Rats (6-6) did manage to tie the game when Nolan Early led off the sixth with a triple and scored on Ryan Skellie’s groundout.

Butler loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Baker worked his way out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout.

After dropping six straight games, Butler has now won back-to-back contests entering tonight’s game at Slippery Rock.

“Even during the losing streak, this was a resilient group,” said Rebyanski. “But we did get the monkey off our back.”
