Simply the Best

Karns City's Breann Wood attacks the net during a lopsided win over Redbank Valley in the District 9 Class A playoffs. The junior earned the Butler Eagle Girls Soccer Player of the Year Award after recording 50 goals and 25 assists for the Gremlins this season.

KARNS CITY — Breann Wood had high expectations for herself heading into the season.

How high? The junior forward on the Karns City girls soccer team had a lofty goal total in mind.

“Thirty,” she said. “Every year, I set a goal for myself. I blew past it.”

Wood left that 30-goal total in the dust, much like she typically does to defenders trying to mark her on the soccer pitch.

Wood ended up with 50 goals to go with 25 assists for the Gremlins this season.

Her efforts earned her the Butler Eagle Girls Soccer Player of the Year Award in a close vote. Seneca Valley senior forward Morgan Williams and Mars senior midfielder Beth Perri also were considered.

“It's incredible because I know there are a lot of great players in the county,” Wood said. “For me to win it coming from little Karns City — I'm just really honored to be recognized.”

Wood did more than just score goals. On a team that had a mere three seniors on the roster, she took on a big leadership role.

She also heaped praise on her teammates — six of whom made the Eagle's girls soccer honor roll.

“That shows we have a very talented team,” Wood said.

“I know 50 goals seems like a lot and I don't want people to think it was all about me,” she added. “I love being able to assist other people. My teammates are all great players and they all can score. I'd rather win and not score a goal than lose and score.”

Wood was aided in particular by sophomore forward Emily LoPresti, who recorded 36 goals and 37 assists to the Karns City effort this season.

The two have been very close on and off the field.

“We've played together since we were little,” Wood said. “We've always been able to connect.”

Early in the season, Wood said she didn't think she was that good at the game.

“I think she is that good,” said Karns City soccer coach Lisa Castiglione. “I think she is just extremely humble about it. She's a great finisher and she has a knack for finding the back of the net.”

Wood proved she could play well against the best the PIAA had to offer in Class A during a 7-2 loss to Greensburg Central Catholic — the only team to solve the Gremlins this season — in the first round of the state playoffs.

Wood scored two goals in that defeat, including the first goal of the match. Greensburg Central Catholic proved to be the state's top team, cruising to a 5-1 win in the PIAA final.

“It was a tough loss,” Wood said. “But we went in there fighting and we didn't back down and let them get in our heads because they were the WPIAL champion.”

Wood is by no means satisfied.

She said there are some things in her game she needs to fine tune to have an even better senior season.

“I'm going to keep working over the summer,” Wood said. “It's going to be my senior year. It's going to be the last ride, one last run.”
