Karns City Area projects no tax increase in preliminary budget

KARNS CITY — Karns City Area School District’s board has unanimously approved the district’s $27 million preliminary budget for the 2026-27 school year with no proposed tax increase.

The preliminary budget passed Monday, May 11, projects expenditures to settle at $27,099,552. While this number is a slight increase from the previous year’s $26.69 million budget, no tax increase is expected for any of the three counties in the district.

In the current fiscal year, Butler County’s rate is 105.64 mills, Armstrong’s is 39.30 and Clarion’s is 40.14 mills.

A mill is equal to $1 for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. Assessed value is not equal to current market value. As a result, the value of a mill compared with the total market value of a property varies by county.

Superintendent Eric Ritzert noted a reassessment in Clarion County will change the millage. It’s not a tax increase, he explained, but rather an adjustment to reflect the reassessment conducted by the county.

Total estimated fund revenue, including revenue from taxes, comes to about $36 million.

The budget will be finalized with a June 15 vote.
