Martin Short opens up about ‘nightmare’ since daughter’s suicide

Comedian Martin Short, still in the early stages of processing his daughter Katherine’s death in February, revealed some of the “nightmare” his family has endured since she died by suicide at age 42.

It was the latest in a series of losses, starting in childhood. Short, the youngest of five children, was 12 when he lost his oldest brother, David, in a car accident. Both his parents died before he was 20, and in 2010, ovarian cancer took his wife of 30 years, Nancy Dolman.

The “Only Murders in the Building” star noted that cancer and the extreme mental health ailments that cost his daughter her life have one thing in common.

“It’s been a nightmare for the family,” he told “CBS Sunday Morning” correspondent Tracy Smith in an interview that aired Sunday. “But the understanding that mental health and cancer, like my wife’s, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases, they are terminal. And my daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could until she couldn’t.”

That made him want to take “mental health out of the shadows, not being ashamed of it, not hiding from the word suicide, but accepting that this can be the last stage of an illness,” he said, noting his work with Bring Change to Mind, an organization started by actor Glenn Close to destigmatize mental illness. “And that’s my approach to this.”

Short dedicated the Lawrence Kasdan documentary of his life, “Marty, Life Is Short,” to both his daughter and the late actor and comedian Catherine O’Hara. The Netflix film, set for release Tuesday, delves into Short’s life losses and his ability to rebound. The title is no accident.

“Last October, I lost Diane Keaton on the same day I lost my sister-in-law, Nancy’s sister, to cancer,” Short said. “And then Rob and Michelle [Reiner] have been my lifelong friends for 40 years. And then Catherine O’Hara, and then my daughter. I mean, it’s been in four months. Staggering. Staggering.”

Short explained the life perspective that enables him to find joy amid all the heartbreak.

“I think we all are in denial about our limited time on this Earth. It’s very difficult to accept it,” Short said. “But the more you accept it, I think it does lift you and make you feel that this is a complicated journey, this life, and the more you accept it with wisdom, the happier you’ll be.”

‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ singer Bonnie Tyler suffers cardiac arrest

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer Bonnie Tyler suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and was later resuscitated in Portugal, according to local media reports.

The 74-year-old 1980s hitmaker was hospitalized last week for an “emergency intestinal surgery,” according to her website.

That site reported Wednesday that Tyler’s surgery was success and she was recuperating in the city of Faro. According to Portuguese media, she suffered a second emergency situation when doctors tried to bring her out of a medically induced coma.

Newspaper Correio da Manhã reported Friday that the Welsh star was in intensive care at Faro Hospital. Doctors were said to have begun treating a general infection with antibiotics after Tyler’s condition worsened.

Her representatives didn’t respond to a request for comment on Monday. Her status is unclear.

Guitarist Ed Poole told fans on Instagram over the weekend that he had no new information to offer about the frontwoman, other that stating that he and his band mates are hoping for the best.

Tyler’s discomfort reportedly began recently when she was performing in London. She traveled to her longtime home in southern Portugal when no immediate cause for concern was identified.

The pop star, whose hits also include “Holding Out for a Hero” and “It’s a Heartache,” soon after suffered a ruptured appendix that urgently required surgery, the Portuguese paper said.

Tyler enjoyed enormous success in 1983 when “Total Eclipse of the Heart” topped the Billboard Hot 100.

“It’s such an anthem, and such a wonderful feeling, I never get tired of singing it,” she told the Guardian in 2009.

The power-pop classic has since been in TV commercials and movies including the 2003 comedy “Old School.”

The next scheduled performance on Tyler’s website is a May 30 concert in Germany. She has shows booked through the end of the year.

Kodak Black released with strict bail conditions after drug trafficking arrest

Kodak Black has been freed from a Florida jail following his recent arrest for alleged drug trafficking, according to a report.

The rapper — who in 2018 legally changed his name from Dieuson Octave to Bill Kapri — was released after posting $75,000 bail, and he will have to adhere to a series of strict rules should he want to remain out of jail.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, 28-year-old Kapri must stay away from illegal drugs, and a judge also forbade him from having contact with any of his associates. The “ZEZE” artist was additionally barred from returning to the crime scene, and he is not allowed to carry a gun.

Kapri was arrested in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday and booked on charges of trafficking more than 10 grams and less than 200 grams of MDMA, according to Orange County’s online records. The count stems from an incident in November 2025, when officers responded to a report of gunfire near a nonprofit called Children’s Safety Village in Orlando.

When they arrived on the scene, they spotted two idling vehicles and Kodak standing nearby with others, according to an arrest affidavit.

A search of the first vehicle, a BMW SUV, turned up cannabis and a pink pill containing MDMA, police said. They also uncovered suspected narcotics, roughly $37,000 in cash and documents with Kapri’s name inside the second vehicle, this one a Lamborghini SUV.

The rapper was only arrested after an official report generated last month confirmed the MDMA weighed 25.34 grams, which is well over the limit of 14 grams.

His lawyer, Bradford Cohen, in a statement to TMZ called Kodak’s arrest a “total joke,” emphasizing that he was nowhere near the drugs when police recovered them.
