Sliders succumb to clutch hitting

SLIPPERY ROCK — What wasn’t there for Chillicothe on Thursday came tenfold on Friday.

The Paints, after stranding 13 runners on base Thursday against Slippery Rock, came up with several clutch hits on Friday — including a two-run double by Dan Zuchowski followed by a two-run homer by Matt Fisher in a four-run seventh inning — en route to a 10-3 Prospect League victory at Jack Critchfield Park.

“It’s baseball,” said Paints manager Greg Cyprett. “ Some nights guys are in the right mindset in key spots.”

The Sliders did not help their cause, committing four errors and allowing eight walks along the way.

“Especially against a team that hits well,” Sliders manager Shawn Pynn said. “When you fall behind early in the count, the zone gets smaller ... it looked like a laser show out there.”

Chillicothe (5-5) scored single runs in the second and third innings off Sliders starter Daniel Harms.

Giancarlo Brunomi opened the second inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Duchowski. The following inning, the Paints’ run was a little more unconventional.

Cody Stevens was hit by a pitch to open the frame, then advanced to second on an errant throw on a pickoff attempt. After a strikeout against Mike Nadratowski, Sliders’ catcher Radley Haddad threw down to second base and Stevens broke for third. The ball bounced into the outfield and Stevens scored.

“If we cut down on that, we’ll be all right,” Pynn said. “We can put two darn good games together. We’ve been hit or miss.”

Chillicothe did load the bases with two outs in the fourth inning after Harms issued three walks, but worked his way out of the jam.

The Sliders (3-6) did even the score in the bottom half of the inning when, with one out Pat Guinane singled and Steve Sulcoski doubled. One out later, Dan Hurlimann had a two-run double.

The Paints responded quickly as they used another sacrifice fly and a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning to make it 4-2.

When Sulcoski’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning plated another run, the Sliders trailed by one run, but then the Paints broke out the bats in the seventh inning to pull away, the two big hits coming off reliever Shawn Patterson.

“We had a talk after the game about getting back to fundamentals,” Pynn said. “Sometimes you tend to forget, maybe a college coach doesn’t stay on top of some things. We have to step it up. We have to be 12-year-olds and really breaking it down.”

Will Nimke kept the Sliders in check for most of his six innings with just two runs and five hits. The first 11 outs he recorded were by grounders and the first 15 outs never left the infield (13 groundouts, a pop-up and liner to shortstop).

“You hate to get down early,” Cyprett said. “It was nice to see a few goose eggs up there. When he’s sharp, he keeps the ball between the knees and the shins. I contemplated keeping him in there one more inning. I’m not sure if it was his concentration or if he was getting tired.”
