Schottenheimer responds as external noise swirls around George Pickens' franchise tag choice
FRISCO, Texas — There's been a lot of external discussion since the NFL draft about George Pickens and his future with the Dallas Cowboys. News breaking hours before the draft about his intention to sign the franchise tag opened that door for speculation. It hasn't necessarily ceased in the days since Pickens actually signed his tag Wednesday.
That discussion, according to head coach Brian Schottenheimer, hasn't happened internally, or with Pickens and his representation.
"I don't think there's any reason for us to have that [conversation]," Schottenheimer said Saturday. "That's not what we plan on doing."
The Cowboys have been adamant this offseason that they won't trade Pickens after he had a breakout season last year, finishing with career highs in catches (93), yards (1,429) and touchdowns (nine). Pickens was headed toward free agency until the Cowboys placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on him. That meant teams could sign him to an offer sheet if they wanted, but they'd have to sacrifice two first-round picks if the Cowboys elected not to match.
No team signed Pickens to an offer sheet with those terms in play.
Signing the franchise tag, Pickens is locked him into a one-year, $27.3 million deal. He and the Cowboys have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal, but the Cowboys have already indicated — publicly and to Pickens and his agent, David Mulugheta directly — that they don't plan to negotiate a deal beyond this year.
It's not a scenario that's ideal for Pickens. Schottenheimer, when asked about it Friday, doesn't believe it'll affect Pickens when he does show up at the team facility.
"I think because George would play this game for a dollar as much as he loves football," Schottenheimer said.
"These guys that love playing the game, they love playing the game," he said.
Pickens didn't show up for voluntary workouts this past week. Pickens likely won't show up to organized team activities next month, either. Signing his franchise tag does mean that Pickens will have to show up for mandatory minicamp from June 16-18 or face fines that can't be waived by the team. Players who miss all three days of minicamp could be fined a maximum total of $93,085.
That appears to be the next tipping point when it comes to the Cowboys and their relationship with one of their star receivers.
