Carmen Scialabba
Carmen Scialabba, 76, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother passed away Wednesday. He lived in Silver Spring, Md.
A former resident of Butler, he was born Nov. 15, 1935. A 1953 graduate of Butler High School, Mr. Scialabba was awarded the Distinguished Graduate Award in 2000 in recognition of his humanitarian achievements. In 1975, he was inducted into the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame in acknowledgment of his boxing career that was cut short when he contracted polio in 1961.
He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966 and received his Master of Arts from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1981. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mr. Scialabba dedicated his life to helping others and received many awards including the Legion of Honor Bronze Medallion from the Chapel of Four Chaplains in 2002, an Honorary Doctorate of Human Letter by Saint Francis University in 2000, the Patrick Henry Award in 1999 and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Handicapped Person of the Year in 1974.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice Collins Scialabba. He is survived by his wife, Marie Scialabba; his daughters Lori (Jerry Carpenter) Scialabba, Toni (David) Windley, Joi (David Clifford) Scialabba and Kellie (Mark) Ruebens; grandchildren, Madalyn and Matthew Carpenter, Janice (Rushit) Hila, Joseph and Leah Windley, David Clifford, Elizabeth Martein and Ben and MaryGrace Ruebens; great-grandchild, Adrianna Hila; brothers, Nicholas and Anthony Scialabba; and his beloved dog, Jubie.
SCIALABBA — Relatives and friends of Carmen Scialabba, who passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012, may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd., West, Silver Spring, Md., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian burial will be at St. John the Baptist Church, 12319 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, Md., at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, Md.
