SRU women's soccer bows, 1-0

WEST CHESTER — The Slippery Rock University women’s soccer season ended Friday with a 1-0 loss at West Chester in the NCAA Division II Tournament’s Round of 16.

Jen Hutchinson scored the lone goal of the game with 4:24 left in regulation for the Rams (15-4-1).

The Rock (14-6-3) nearly scored the game’s first goal minutes into the contest. Lucy Hannon beat her defender and found teammate Shelby Ward in the box. Ward’s shot hit the crossbar and deflected straight down, staying out of the net.

SRU was also foiled on two corner kicks late in the game. West Chester scored its goal in transition following one of them.

The Rock played its fifth road game in two weeks, winning the PSAC title during that time.

“I think we looked tired today,” SRU coach Noreen Herlihy said. “What this team did over the last two weeks was incredible. Being the underdog and winning on the road the way they did was an amazing accomplishment.”

Dana O’Neill made four saves in net for SRU and increased her season minutes total to 2,125, more minutes than any goalkeeper in the nation has played this year. She had 10 shutouts, an 0.80 goals against average and an .812 save percentage this year.

The Rock returns five All-PSAC players next year while losing only two starters to graduation.

BasketballButler graduate Jen Barry sank a 3-pointer to tie the game with 18 seconds remaining, then hit two free throws with less than a second on the clock to power Butler County Community College to a 53-51 women’s basketball win over Lorain Friday night.Shelby Johnston had 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Pioneers (1-3) while Barry had 17 points, Cam Horwat 10 points and 12 rebounds.
