East Brady group touts attractions

Revitalization is topic of meeting

EAST BRADY, Clarion County — Ideas to improve the area were discussed Wednesday at a meeting hosted by the East Brady Area Development Corporation.

About 20 people attended the meeting of the group that wants to revitalize the borough and region.

It has been inactive for several years, since the organization sold its 18-room apartment building, said Dawn Weibel, president of the group.

“We’ve had a slow time since we sold the apartments,” she said.

The group wants to further tap into the area’s natural resources such as the river and the new bike trail.

Work on more lodging options is another focus.

Jenna Buechele, funeral director with Buechele Funeral Home, suggested that East Brady could host a potential “adventure triathlon” event, with kayaking, biking and running. She participated in a similar event in Pittsburgh.

“It would bring in so many people,” Buechele said.

While special events are good, board member Gayle Wright said there have to be other things going on in East Brady that are ongoing such as new business.

“We need something that’s long-lasting,” she said.

Coordinators from East Brady’s annual Riverfest, as well as residents from Bradys Bend, also attended. Some talked about issues such as vacant storefronts on Main Street and the lack of police coverage.

The development corporation has recently launched a website, at www.eastbrady.com. It’s not just the group’s website, but “a community website,” said Melissa Gottschalk. She’s asking for photo submissions to use on the website.

Gottschalk of Cranberry Township co-owns the Old Bank Deli and Coffee Shoppe, and said East Brady is a great place to be a part of.

“You have a real gem here,” she said.
