PennDOT reports record-low number of fatal crashes in 2025

The number of fatalities on Pennsylvania roads last year was the lowest since records began being kept in 1928.

Traffic fatalities in the Keystone State in 2025 numbered 1,047, a decrease of 80 from the previous year, according to data released this week by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

According to crash statistics from PennDOT’s database, 11 of those fatal crashes took place in Butler County in 2025, compared with 15 in 2024.

The number of reported traffic crashes in 2025 was also nearly a record low: 109,515, second only to 2020, when traffic volumes were affected by the COVID-19 shutdowns. Out of those 2025 crashes, 979 resulted in fatalities, the lowest amount on record and down from 1,060 in 2024.

In Butler County, the number of reportable crashes increased year-over-year, from 676 in 2024 to 760 in 2025.

Across Pennsylvania, 258 fatalities were reported last year in crashes involving impaired drivers, a decrease from 342 in 2024 and another record low.

Other record lows include fatalities involving a driver or passenger who wasn’t wearing a seat belt (from 311 in 2024 to 259 last year), as well as lane departure crashes, which fell from 537 in 2024 to 492 last year.

“Even one life lost is one too many, so while this decrease is good news, Pennsylvania remains committed to moving toward zero deaths on our roadways,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll in a news release.

Not all types of fatalities saw decreases, however. Bicycle fatalities rose from 19 in 2024 to 28 last year, and of those 28, 14 were not wearing a helmet. In addition, distracted-driver fatalities rose slightly, from 49 in 2024 to 54 last year.
