The Envirothon is designed to give students an opportunity to acquire and demonstrate their knowledge of environmental resources and interactive relationships between resources and human activities.

The students were challenged in forestry, aquatics, wildlife and water resources, soils and alternative/renewable energy sources.

Tests were conducted by personnel from the Bureau of Forestry, the state Game Commission and Fish and Boat Commission, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of Environmental Protection, Butler County Recycling Department, the Butler County Conservation District and Jennings.

The Seneca Valley team is led by teachers Rebecca Finch and Dana Hadley. The team will represent Butler County in the state Envirothon at Penn State University May 21-22. The winner of the state competition will represent Pennsylvania at the national competition July 29 to Aug. 4 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York.

Slippery Rock High School's team placed second.
