Taylor Swift files trademarks to protect voice, image from AI
Taylor Swift has filed to trademark two voice clips and an image of her in concert in an apparent attempt to shore up her identity against AI incursions.
Her company, TAS Rights Management, LLC, filed three applications Friday with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office — one for the audio of her saying, “Hey, it’s Taylor Swift,” and another for “Hey, it’s Taylor,” known as sound marks. The third is a photo of her holding a pink guitar, wearing a “multicolored iridescent bodysuit with silver boots” and standing on a particular stage.
This follows actor Matthew McConaughey’s recent eight trademark approvals from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for numerous images and his “Dazed and Confused” catchphrase, “Alright, alright, alright,” part of an overall attempt to put the kibosh on any AI apps’ or users’ attempts to hijack his likeness and voice, he stated at the time.
While U.S. law already protects songs under copyright law, and use of a person’s likeness or image falls under “Right of Publicity” laws, AI has changed the landscape, trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben IP explained in his intellectual-property blog.
Filings such as Swift’s and McConaughey’s add an extra layer of protection by prohibiting “confusingly similar” imitations, Gerber wrote. Likewise, the detailed description of Swift’s attire and surroundings in the photograph could allow for legal action against AI-manipulated or -generated images evoking her likeness.
Neither Swift’s nor McConaughey’s filings have been tested in court, though Gerben said “the legal theories behind the filings are strong.”
The pop superstar’s TAS Rights Management has filed more than 300 trademark applications in the U.S. and 400-plus worldwide, the United Nations’ World Intellectual Property Organization noted in August 2025. They range from song titles to tour names to her three cats’ names, WIPO said, a “model for artist IP protection.”
Swift and McConaughey are far from alone in fearing AI’s unauthorized use of their likeness and voice. In January, more than 700 creators signed a proclamation denouncing such use as theft and ran ads in The New York Times, the intellectual property blog IP CloseUp reported.
Swift’s likeness has shown up in AI fakes from chatbots and porn images to Donald Trump’s AI-fueled fake presidential endorsement in August 2024. That became part of her reason for going public weeks later with her endorsement of his opponent, Kamala Harris, and running mate Tim Walz.

Harry Styles and Zoë Kravitz have confirmed to loved ones that they’re engaged, less than a year into the stars’ romance.
The Grammy-winning pop star, 32, and 37-year-old Emmy nominee — who was photographed sporting a massive diamond on her left ring finger when the couple was photographed in London earlier this month — have told “a small circle” they’re heading for the altar, an insider told People Monday.
While it’s unclear who in their camps has been notified of the engagement, the “Big Little Lies” star has reportedly been flaunting her ring to pals, and a source previously told People that her dad, Lenny Kravitz, “really enjoyed” meeting the “Aperture” crooner.
Representatives for Styles and Kravitz did not immediately respond to the Daily News’ request for comment.
Styles and the “Blink Twice” director were first linked in August, nearly a year after she and Channing Tatum ended their yearlong engagement in October 2024.
Sources also confirmed the engagement to The News’ columnist Richard Johnson this weekend, with one insider saying they’d “never seen two people so besotted with each other” as Kravitz and Styles appear to be.
Kravitz was married to actor Karl Glusman from 2019 to late 2020. Styles was previously linked to his “Don’t Worry Darling” director Olivia Wilde for nearly two years, ending in spring 2023. He dated actress Taylor Russell for a little less than a year after ending his relationship with Wilde.
In the 2010s, he dated Kravitz’ good friend Taylor Swift, which is believed to have inspired several songs on her “1989” album.

Helena Bonham Carter has officially checked out of the White Lotus.
HBO on Friday confirmed the Oscar-nominated actress will no longer appear in the upcoming fourth season of the hit show created by Mike White.
“With filming just underway on Season 4 of ‘The White Lotus,’ it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement to Variety.
“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten, and will be recast in the coming weeks,” the statement continued. “HBO, the producers, and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”
The casting shake-up is not expected to impact the filming schedule.
Bonham Carter was announced as part of the upcoming cast in January, with Alexander Ludwig, AJ Michalka, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Marissa Long, Chris Messina and Sandra Bernhard also set to appear. Other big names slated star include Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Dylan Ennis, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, Marissa Long, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani and Nadia Tereszkiewicz.
“The White Lotus,” which premiered on HBO in 2021, follows guests and employees at a fictional resort at different locations all over the world. The upcoming season is set to take place in the French Rivera during the Cannes Film Festival.
