Butler teen does Eagle project

Boy Scout Gabe Slagle of Troop 16 built this replacement dock for one of the cabins at Moraine State Park. The project was part of his Eagle Scout work.

Gabe Slagle, 16, the son of Schon and Amy Slagle of Butler, completed his project required to reach the Eagle Scout rank by building a replacement dock for one of Moraine State Park's cabins.

Gabe, a member of Troop 16, said he chose the project from a list of Eagle Scout worthy projects at Moraine.

“Of all of them, this one piqued my interest the most because I am an avid fisherman,” Gabe said. “it'll make it a little nicer for the people coming to visit.”

Gabe said the old dock had splintered wood and deflated floats. He said the park supplied him with the design and the floats, and he raised money to buy the remaining materials.

Gabe raised $1,100 for the project and plans to donate the remaining $400 to the park for future dock replacements.

He said putting the dock together was a new experience for him and hard work that required the help of his family, friends, fellow scouts and other volunteers.

“I want to thank everyone who helped me with my project and everyone who donated their time and money,” Gabe said.

He said he also has his parents to thank for the project's completion.

“They've pushed me along through my scouting experience,” he said.

Slagle has been scouting for 11 years and has 33 merit badges. He will attend Butler High School as a junior this year and plans to graduate in 2018, pursuing trade school for heating and air conditioning.

He said he hopes to stand before the Eagle Scout board of review within the next year
