Soccer player figures to impact league champion

BUTLER TWP — Point Park University women's soccer coach Maggie Kuhn sees Chloe Bowser as a building block.

And she knows something about that.

In four years as Pioneers coach, Kuhn has accumulated more than twice as many wins (39) as any coach in the program's history. She led the team to its first-ever KIAC title and NAIA Tournament berth last fall.

She's looking to Butler senior center-back Bowser and others like her to maintain the program's momentum next season.

“We're losing a number of seniors and we're bringing in around 15 new players,” Kuhn said. “I'm expecting Chloe will be an impact player for us right away.

“She contacted us and came down for a visit. It was a good fit for everybody.”

Bowser was an all-section player for the Golden Tornado. She scored three goals her junior year and tallied one last year.

“I was more of a defensive player, playing center sweep,” Bowser said. “When I visited Point Park, I really liked the city and Maggie is a super coach.

“I felt like I belonged there.”

Bowser also considered Indiana (Pa.), Penn State Behrend, Marietta (Ohio) and Pitt-Johnstown before choosing Point Park.

Carrying a 3.3 grade point average at Butler, Bowser plans to study sports art and entertainment management at Point Park.

She plans to win some soccer games as well. The Pioneers were 12-7-1 a year ago, setting a program record for wins in a season.

“It's just fun to play,” Bowser said. “All I want to do is help my team win.

“I've been playing soccer for 11 years now. I played volleyball through eighth grade, but that's a fall sport in high school and I had to make a choice.”

And soccer is her game.

“Butler has a good soccer program and we know Chloe is used to tough competition,” Kuhn said. “I've never seen her play for her club team (Northern Steel), but I like what I've seen of her in high school.

“She's a tough player with tremendous vision of the field. At Butler, she was surrounded by good players and that made her a strong competitor.”

Bowser admitted that “I need to be more aware of where I am on the field and keep my head up more.”

Regardless, Kuhn likes the player she's getting.

“Chloe fits in well with the current girls on the team and that makes a big difference,” the coach said. “Team chemistry has been a big part of our success.

“We're very happy with the talent she is bringing here.”

Point Park is graduating nine seniors from last season. Bowser becomes the second Butler County player on the squad, joining defensive midfielder Abby Magliocca of Slippery Rock. Magliocca scored a goal and three points while playing in 15 games last fall as a freshman. She started three games.

The Pioneers' 2015 season ended with a 5-0 first-round NAIA Tournament loss to defending national champion Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), the tourney's top seed.
