A mistake by KC school board

This is in response to the article “Contents of KC School Left Behind” (March 11, Page 1). It is a disgrace that usable school library books were considered garbage.

In 1993, Karns City Area School District purchased the Sugarcreek Elementary School. The following year, students and teachers were present and prepared to have classes. However, the bookshelves in the library were completely empty. Students and teachers had no opportunity for book selection for recreational reading nor for curriculum projects. The only available resources were books borrowed from the Butler Traveling Library or financial gifts for purchasing new materials. The need for books was great.

Students in grades K-6 visited the library for an assigned class and at specific times. Having an insufficient supply and assortment of books presented stress for students and classroom teachers. To develop an exceptional collection of books for all grades was a major undertaking, requiring years.

To learn the Karns City School Board abandoned this wonderful assortment enjoyed and used by teachers and students has been disappointing and distressing. Surely the books could have been used. Options include:

  1. Given to students for recreational reading at home.
  2. Placed in grade level classrooms for reading.
  3. Provided to the art department as a resource for projects.
  4. Sent to needy areas.

KCSB’s discarding and disregard for this resource is preposterous. Reading is basic to education, and literacy is a challenge to all schools. This action lessened students’ learning opportunities.

How thoughtless, and what poor judgment.
