Tornado track teams top McDowell
Butler's boys and girls track and field teams got their season started with a flourish Monday at Art Bernardi Stadium.
Ryan Marcella took first place in the 100 and 200 meters and javelin, along with running a leg of the winning 4x100 relay in the Golden Tornado boys' 125-25 triumph over McDowell.
Gabby Boden won the 100, 200 and 400 meters along with running a leg of the winning 4x100 relay in the Tornado girls' 111-59 win over McDowell. Anna Baxter won both hurdle events and ran legs on the victorious 4x100 and 4x800 relays.
Chelsey Kabel won the 1,600 meters and ran a leg of the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relays for the girls.
Four freshman boys won events in their first varsity meets. Guiness Brown won the 400, Tyler Rekich the 300-meter hurdles, Sage Vavro the 3,200 and Jacob Pomykata the discus.
Butler opens section competition Thursday against Pine-Richland at Art Bernardi Stadium. Knoch is part of the meet as well.

Ian Balquist struck out eight in four innings and produced a double, three singles and two RBI Monday in Slippery Rock's season-opening 14-4 win over Sharon.

Maybe Wonderling scored four goals for Freeport, but the Yellowjackets dropped a 21-7 decision to Knoch. Tea Smith added two goals and Lily Mcneil one.
Madison Ravotti had 12 saves, Hayley Smieszek eight for Freeport.
