Harrisville man accused of stealing dog in Butler

A Harrisville man is accused of stealing a dog from a Butler apartment.

Wayne Alexander Barry, 37, was charged Wednesday, April 15, by Butler police with one felony count each of burglary and criminal trespass and one misdemeanor count each of theft and receiving stolen property following an incident Tuesday.

Police said they responded to a North Washington Street apartment for a reported burglary. The resident told police her dog and some other belongings were missing when she returned to the apartment.

The door to the apartment had been screwed shut because the lock was broken, police said.

Police spoke with a contractor at the apartment that day who said a man came to the apartment and took the dog. The resident had indicated Barry was a potential suspect, police said.

Later that day, police made a traffic stop on Barry’s vehicle and asked about the incident. Barry told police he went to the apartment around noon and entered the apartment, then the dog ran out, so Barry went in to grab a leash, according to charging documents.

Police said Barry did not have permission to enter the residence or take anything.

Police executed a search warrant Wednesday on a Karns City residence and found the dog and leash, which were returned to the owner.

Barry’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. April 27 before District Judge William Fullerton. He’s being held in Butler County Prison on a $25,000 bail.
