A 36-year-old Slippery Rock woman who was shot by state police during a standoff in October has been released from a hospital.

At her preliminary hearing Wednesday, she was bound over for trial on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment.

During the early morning hours of Oct 21, police responding to a report about a suicidal woman were confronted by a shotgun-toting Brittany Ann Kitner at her apartment on New Castle Road. After a brief standoff, at least one officer shot Kitner in the thigh, according to earlier reports.

She was flown to an Ohio hospital for treatment and on Wednesday her lawyer, Kevin Abramovitz, said she had recently recovered from the gunshot wound. Abramovitz, a lawyer based in Allegheny County, and Kitner made a brief appearance at District Judge William S. O'Donnell's courthouse in Slippery Rock.

Kitner walked unaided and Abramovitz said “she's taking it day by day.” He continued, “We're glad everyone is OK.”

According to court documents, “(Kitner) proceeded into the doorway and raised the shotgun at which time troopers engaged the defendant.”

Police said they fired at least one round, hitting her in the thigh; she fell to the ground, letting go of the shotgun.

Kitner did not fire any shots, police said. Both officers secured the woman and then immediately provided first aid to her.

Kitner faces charges in a second, unrelated case where she is being charged with a felony count of burglary and a misdemeanor simple assault. According to paperwork filed by Zelienople police, officers responding to an assault on Grandview Avenue concluded that Kitner was involved in an assault and burglary. A preliminary hearing in that case is pending.
