BC3 golf earns 2nd at states
The Butler County Community College men's golf team finished second in the PCAA state tournament Tuesday at the Penn National Golf Club in Fayetteville.
The Pioneers concluded their fall season by carding a five-player team score of 502 for the 36-hole event. CCAC North won the tourney with a 465.
Knoch graduate Matt Eshelman placed fifth individually — earning first-team all-state status — with an 84-82—166. Karns City grad Tucker Preston carded an 84-83—167 for sixth, while Mars graduate Garrett Gabriel shot a 79-90—169 for seventh. They were both second-team all-state.
BC3's second-place team finish was its second in program history. The Pioneers have never won the state tourney.
Butler graduates Tyler Friel and Bill Smith carded a 187 and 194, respectively.
CCAC North's Eric Poplawski carded a 72-73—145 to finish 1-over par and earn medalist honors.
Slippery Rock posted its third consecutive shutout Tuesday, blanking West Chester, 2-0, on the road.Chris Davis and Stephen Donnelly scored goals for The Rock (6-2-5, 2-2-2). Reigning PSAC Athlete of the Week Clayton Master made four saves to get the shutout in goal.SRU returns home Saturday to host Millersville in a 1 p.m. game at Egli Field.
Emer Flatley scored on a penalty kick in the 67th minute to give Slippery Rock a 1-0 lead, but West Chester's Melissa McKeary scored in the 79th minute to tie the game and Jen Hutchinson scored in overtime to give West Chester — ranked second in the country — a 2-1 victory to remain undefeated.Dana O'Neill made five saves for The Rock (7-4-1, 4-4-1) while Shannon Fedyk made four saves for the Golden Rams (11-0-1, 8-0-1).
