BC3 to host jazz band from Pgh.
The Big Band Jazz Series at Butler County Community College presents the Pittsburgh Jazz Society Big Band at 8 p.m. tonight in the Succop Theater on campus.
The group will perform new works, as well as classics, in "Hot Jazz for a Cold Winter's Night III."
The group's repertoire includes jazz standards by composers such as Horace Silver, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and others arranged by the band's director, Mike Tomaro.
Butler area members include pianist Claire Rhein, a student at Seneca Valley High School, and trumpeter Will Weltman, a student at Slippery Rock University.
The band was formed about 14 years ago as a way for younger jazz musicians to gain performance experience and learn from older jazz musicians who spend time advising and mentoring. Members of the band also compete for scholarships awarded by the Jazz Society.
Single tickets to tonight's show cost $15 in advance and $17 at the door; students pay $10.
Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to noon Fridays. Call 724-284-8505.
