BC3's executive director retires

Speidel
Speidel worked 14 years at BC3

BUTLER TWP — William D. Speidel III recently retired from Butler County Community College after 14 years as executive director of the BC3 Education Foundation and as vice president of institutional advancement for the college.

Speidel took advantage of an early retirement incentive offered by the college to administrators to leave June 30. He was hired in 1995.

While at BC3, Speidel launched the college's first campaign in 1992, started the first golf outing at Butler County Club, created the BC3 Alumni Association in 1997 and took the lead on the college's first capital campaign to raise funds for the new Science, Technology and Cultural Center, which was built in 2002.

The campaign goal in 1999 was $3.5 million. It raised $4.8 million when it ended in 2003.

He also was involved with creating the The Succop Conservancy.

In 2000, Tom and JoAnn Succop donated 30 acres of their family estate in Penn Township to the foundation, which was sold to Butler Country Club.

In 2001, 50 acres more were donated to the Foundation as The Succop Conservancy. Today it is an environmental and cultural education center, managed by the foundation.

Before coming to BC3, Speidel was the director of development at Clarion University. He had been program director at the Butler County Family YMCA after undergraduate school.

He is working on a Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh in higher education management.

BC3 President Nick Neupauer is working with the college's trustees, the foundation, and others to assess the needs of the college before a replacement is sought.
