CRANBERRY TWP — Police say a convicted retail thief tried to make a fraudulent return at the township Wal-Mart.

Steven R. Parsons, 32, of Butler allegedly tried to return a TV stand valued at $248 in October 2016 after walking into the store with no visible items. He was accompanied by a child.

Parsons received a gift card valued at about $262 from the customer service desk — $248 for the stand and another $14 for taxes — then exited the store.

An investigation showed that Parsons had at least five prior convictions of retail theft at the time of this most recent incident.

He was informed that he was no longer permitted on any property owned or operated by Wal-Mart, according to the police report.

Parsons faces one felony charge of retail theft, and misdemeanor charges of theft by deception and trespassing.

He waived his charges to county court and was released on his own recognizance.

He will be arraigned in county court on Feb. 28.
