PITTSBURGH — June is a month when many young people take off their caps and gowns to begin a new chapter in their lives. It will be that way for a 43-year-old Butler High School graduate.

A Class of 1990 member, Dr. Steven Wolfe of Pittsburgh, who is the director of Forbes Hospital family medicine residency, gets an additional title and the responsibilities next month.

Wolfe will be the Dean of the Lake Erie College of Medicine Forbes Hospital Clinical Campus, which will open June 1 with 26 medical students. Next June that number is expected to increase to 52 students.

Wolfe said most medical students spend their first two years in a classroom, followed by two years of supervised clinical hours.

“I’m in charge of making sure they’re getting a good education and facilitating their evaluations,” he said.

Wolfe said the students will rotate to a new specialization monthly for 24 months, so they can determine what specific field of medicine they want to pursue.

Wolfe said the goal of the new facility is to try to keep newly trained doctors in Western Pennsylvania.

“When we train doctors in the area, they stay in the area,” he said.

Wolfe, who said he is glad to help Western Pennsylvania, enjoys his new role.

“If I had to pick the perfect job, I have it,” he said.
