Butler Little Theatre presents ‘Downstairs’

With only three actors, a basement set and a little over 90 minutes, “Downstairs” is a play that defies easy categorization, built on character study that lets its actors sink their teeth into their roles.

These are the exact reasons why Jud Stewart wanted to direct the show, knowing that it can be powerful, because he saw it on Broadway a few years ago.

According to Stewart, “Downstairs” is the story of a woman who allows her estranged brother to crash in her basement for a few days, to the chagrin of her husband — and perhaps her better judgment. Stewart said he thinks the show will leave audiences thinking, possibly for days, like it did for him when he saw it on Broadway.

“It’s thought-provoking. It’s a little heavier. It’s not scary. I think it’s emotional,” Stewart said. “I characterize this play as a slice in time. When it opens, it’s one time. When it closes, it’s a little more down the road.”

Butler Little Theatre’s production features Elizabeth Smith, Tom Smithyman and Jud M. Stewart, the director’s son.

Stewart said the story is simple, but it leaves a lot up to a viewer’s interpretation.

It is the characters and the strength of the actors delivering their lines that Stewart said is most likely to draw the audience in, because they have a lot to work with in the writing of the play.

“We spent a lot of time talking about the characters. What is the character thinking? Where are they coming from?” he said. “It’s a beautifully written play.”

The whole show takes place in a basement set constructed by longtime Butler Little Theatre alumnus George Arnold.

The set contributes to the feel of the show, because it “really gives you a sense that you’re in a basement, which really heightens the claustrophobia of the show.”

“You are trapped,” Stewart said, commenting on the audience’s relationship with the characters.

“Downstairs” shows at 7:30 p.m. on March 20, 21, and 24 through 28; and at 2:30 p.m. March 22 at Butler Little Theatre, 1 Howard St. in Butler. Tickets are available online for $18 at Butler Little Theatre’s website at butlerlittletheatre.com.
