Raiders blanked in soccer semifinal

Over the past month, the Seneca Valley boys soccer team has won in all sorts of ways.

By blowout, like the Raiders did in a 7-0 rout of Mt. Lebanon in the WPIAL 4A quarterfinals and 5-2 over Norwin for the district title.

They have also won by the skin of their teeth, like they did in a pair of 3-2 wins in the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs and a 1-0 victory over Abington Saturday to reach the PIAA semifinals.

But the run came to an end for Seneca Valley in a 3-0 loss to Radnor Tuesday night at Chambersburg High School.

“They came out really strong and had a lot of energy,” said Seneca Valley coach George Williams about Radnor.

But the Raiders (19-3-1)matched Radnor’s energy until Bobby Hydrisko scored on a bending shot from 35 yards away to put Radnor up 1-0 with 7:13 remaining in the first half.

A few minutes later, Ben Engstrom scored to give Radnor a 2-0 lead at the break.

That sent Seneca Valley into chase mode.

The Raiders had a couple of prime chances in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but couldn’t break through.

Radnor added an insurance goal when Bennett Mueller found the net with 14 minutes left in the match.

“It was just one of those things where it was just their night,” Williams said.

The loss ended a six-match winning streak for SV.

Radnor plays Wilson Saturday in Hershey for the state title.

Seneca Valley, though, can take some solace in having the most successful season in program history.

The Raiders won their first WPIAL title and advanced to a match away from playing for a state championship.

“I told them after the game that I couldn’t be prouder of them,” Williams said. “They did something no other team was able to do — win a WPIAL title — and that’s something they will always have.”
