Freeport goes extra mile for 3-2 soccer playoff win

Freeport's boys soccer team went the extra mile to earn the program's first playoff win in four years.

Daniel Lynch scored on the sixth penalty kick, followed by a save from Yellowjackets' goalkeeper Luke Heider to seal a 3-2 win over Keystone Oaks in a WPIAL Class 2A first-round playoff at the Mars Athletic Complex Saturday night.

Hunter Hardin and Christian Waronsky scored in the penalty-kick round prior to Lynch's tally.

“We trained for that in the days leading up to the game,” said Freeport coach Dave Teorsky. “We became familiar with the process and it gave us confidence.

“I couldn't be more proud of the guys.”

After a scoreless first half, Freeport trailed 2-1 late, but Addison Stewart scored his second goal of the game with just 42 seconds left in regulation.

Hardin assisted on Stewart's two tallies.

Heider made 12 total saves, including three on penalty kicks.

“Keystone Oaks put a lot of pressure on us, but our back four and goalkeeper did a great job,” said Teorsky. “It was a very evenly-matched game.”
