KC girls soccer rolls, 6-0
McKenna Martin and Brooke Stahlman scored two goals each Wednesday night to lead the Karns City girls soccer team to a 6-0 District 9 playoff victory over Brookville at Clarion University.
Martin scored on a penalty kick for the Gremlins' first goal. Emma Dailey and Jillian Morrow scored single tallies.
Ally Fennell and Alexis Moore had two assists each for KC. Rossi McMillen got the shutout in goal, making three saves. The Gremlins had a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Karns City (17-1-1) advances to the district championship game against Clearfield next week.
Steven Papik scored the lone Mars goal as the Planets were upended by West Allegheny, 5-1, in the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for Mars (17-2-1). West Allegheny (13-5-1) won its third in a row.The game was tied at one at halftime. West Allegheny scored the go-ahead goal with 15 minutes left and was able to score on a few counters late as Mars pressed to tie the game.Quaker Valley 7, Freeport 0 — The Yellowjackets (12-6-2) trailed 1-0 late in the first half before Quaker Valley (18-2) scored twice in the final three minutes of the half to break this WPIAL 2A playoff game open.Quaker Valley (18-2) won its 17th straight game, with 12 of those wins being shutouts.Deer Lakes 1, North Catholic 0 (OT) — Michael Sullivan scored in the 85th minute of play to earn for the Lancers (15-4) a trip to the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals.The goal came after North Catholic was unable to clear the ball following a free kick from Deer Lakes' Ryan Hanes 45 yards from the net.Ryan Jackson made seven saves for the Trojans (13-4-2).
Knoch (18-1), playing without all-state players Hannah Rowe and Kennedy Christy, defeated Woodland Hills 3-1 in the first round of the WPIAL 3A playoffs.The Knights dropped the first game 27-29 before winning 25-21, 25-22, 25-6. Rowe and Christy missed the match due to injury.Skylar Burkett had 19 kills for Knoch. Rory MCCune added 10 kills, Madison Raypush and Mykenzie Werner 13 service points.Knoch plays West Allegheny in the next round Monday at a site and time to be determined.Elizabeth Forward 3, Mars 1 — The Planets' season ended with this first-round WPIAL Class 3A loss at Shaler.Seneca Valley 3, Norwin 0 — The Raiders advanced to the WPIAL 4A quarterfinals with a 25-18, 27-25, 25-14 win.SV plays at North Allegheny at 7:30 p.m. Monday.DuBois 3, Karns City 0 — The Gremlins dropped this regular season match 25-16, 25-18, 25-15. Emily Huff had four kills and seven aces for KC while Mackenzie Dunn had 14 digs and three kills, Ashley Fix 15 digs.Cassidy Nolan contributed two kills and four blocks, Rosalie Carden seven digs, two kills and six assists, Peyton Turner two digs, two kills and six assists for KC.
Laura Greb, Brooke Bauer and Ally Bauer all won their singles matches as Knoch won its PIAA Class AA first-round match against Central Cambria, 3-0 on Tuesday.The match was halted after the Knights clinched the victory.Knoch will face District 11 champion Moravian Academy in the quarterfinals Friday at Hershey Racquet Club.
Slippery Rock freshman Jacob Wolak tied for 10th out of 36 golfers at the PIAA Championships held at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.Wolak carded a 79 and 81 for a 160, earning himself a PIAA medal. He became the first Slippery Rock golfer to medal on his first trip to the state tourney.
