George Tymas Sr.
George M. Tymas Sr., 97, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at his residence, The Village at St. Barnabas, in Richland Township.
George was born July 27, 1928, in Etna, Pa., the son of the late Harry and Anna (Syrko) Tymas. He was the husband of the late Alice Elizabeth (Koeberlein) Tymas, whom he married in 1952. After marriage, they moved to West Deer and later built a house in 1959.
George graduated from Etna High School in 1946, where he played basketball and was later voted into the Shaler Area School District Hall of Fame in 2008 for his “Class of 1945” basketball team.
George proudly served in Korea with the U.S. Army in 1951 and 1952, where he was a staff sergeant and operated a mortar. After returning from Korea, George worked briefly at Horne’s in Pittsburgh and at Peoples Gas Company. George attended Penn Tech to learn telephone electronics under the GI Bill. He then began working for the North Pittsburgh Telephone Company (now Consolidated Communications) in 1957, and was a central office technician. George retired from the NPTC after 30 years in 1991, but continued to play golf with co-workers. George golfed a couple of days a week up until close to his 97th birthday.
George was an active member of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish, especially St. Victor Church in West Deer. He served for many years in the St. Victor Men’s Club and worked most all of the parish fish fries. He was also well known for calling and working at church bingos. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 5501, for many years and served as Grand Knight from 1983 to 1984. Whenever a job needed to be done, George was quick to volunteer.
George leaves behind a son, George M. Tymas Jr. (Kathy), of West Deer; a daughter, Gail Raley (Bill), of Butler; six grandchildren, Tara (Dave) Howes, Tricia (Paul) Brandt, Kaitlyn (Jake) Watts, Timothy (Julia) Raley, Michelle Raley and Scott (Erika) Raley; and five great-grandchildren, David, Alaina, Adelaide, Ethan and Aurelia.
Besides his parents and his wife, Alice, George was preceded in death by his brother, John Tymas; and sister Kathryn Haselton.
TYMAS — Friends of George M. Tymas Sr., who died Wednesday, March 4, 2026, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer.
Parting prayers will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 9, at the funeral home. The Catholic funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lakes Parish, St. Victor Church, Bairdford, West Deer, with the Rev. James P. Holland officiating.
He will be laid to rest next to his wife in Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Indiana Township.
