HARMONY — The Harmony Museum's annual "WeihnachtsMarkt," or German Christmas Market, will take place Saturday and Sunday in Historic Harmony.

The weekend combines shopping with music and dance, German food and other refreshments, children's activities that include meeting Father Christmas, and wagon rides.

The market is modeled on traditional Christmas season markets throughout Germany. An antiques "village" organized by local dealers is new this year. So are having museum rooms decorated for the holiday by volunteers, including one in scherenschnitten (cut paper artwork) done by folks from nearby "sister" historic site Old Economy Village.

The unique Yobp-Eckstein log house village and toy railroad begins its annual holiday season display in the Wagner House museum annex. Dozens of stalls and booths feature artisans and their work, including jewelry, tin and iron goods, folk art, paintings and drawings, dolls, pottery, clocks, beeswax candles, ornaments, quilts, stained and art glass, furniture, greeting cards, soaps, Christmas cookies and gingerbread, among other things.

Entertainers include the Wha-Ke-we-nn hammered dulcimer ensemble from West Virginia and Pittsburgh Mannerchor Choir, Mannerchor Children's Choir and Schuhplattlers dancers, as well as John Burgh and Friends, Ambridge Steel Drum Band, dulcimer player Mr. Bill, and the Seneca Valley High School Madrigals.

All sorts of German foods and refreshments will be available, including mulled cider and homemade root beer. Market hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, concluding with an evening tree lighting and carol sing, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, $3 for students, and free for children younger than 6. A Landmark District walking tour is $5 per person, but free for youngsters younger than 17. Market proceeds benefit Historic Harmony and its eight museum properties.
