Miller Minutes - ‘Experience art you don’t usually seek out’
Book nerds and movie buffs have been at war since Valentine’s Day weekend, all thanks to Emerald Fennell’s rendition of “Wuthering Heights.”
Loosely based (if you can say even that) upon Emily Bronte’s famous gothic romance novel, this movie has been picked apart from every angle. For its inappropriate subject matter, for its deviation from (or disrespect of) the source material, its inaccurate costuming, neglect of thematic elements and its uninspired soundtrack.
Never have the literary and cinematic worlds been more at odds. This debate begs a larger question about book-to-movie adaptations and what makes good art.
Full disclosure, I didn’t like “Wuthering Heights” when I read it at 17. I found it unbelievable. Art, to be enjoyed, needs to hold a kernel of truth. Even abstract art has recognizable elements. Art also needs to be beautiful, which is subjective, but with some sort of harmony between colors, sounds and the like.
Knowing this, is “Wuthering Heights” bad? Yes … to me. But to someone else it could be amazing, even if it doesn’t stick to the original. What I’m trying to say is: Look with a critical eye, but don’t ever “yuck” someone’s “yum.” Take the time this weekend to experience art you don’t usually seek out. Get out of your comfort zone, try new things.
That said, I know anyone could enjoy what we have going on in Butler County this weekend!
