PITTSBURGH — Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett is kicking off his campaign for the 2010 Republican gubernatorial nomination.

Corbett is scheduled to make his announcement tonight at the Heinz History Center. The event is the first stop on a 10-day tour of the state that will end in the Philadelphia suburbs on Sept. 24.

The 60-year-old Corbett is a former U.S. attorney for western Pennsylvania.

He was elected to a second four-year term as state attorney general last year, and is best-known for his agency's ongoing investigation of alleged corruption in the state Legislature.

Corbett faces competition in the Republican primary from U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach.

PITTSBURGH — The nationally renowned SWAT team in Pittsburgh is being honored at a ceremony in Oklahoma for its handling of a shooting in which three officers were killed in April.The alleged shooter, 22-year-old Richard Poplawski, surrendered after firing an estimated 800 rounds of ammunition during a 40-minute shootout.The 40-member Pittsburgh SWAT team will receive a valor award Thursday in Tulsa at the annual gathering of the National Tactical Officers Association.

PITCAIRN, Pa. — The American Red Cross is helping 15 people — 10 adults and five children — left homeless when three neighboring homes burned in the Pittsburgh suburb of Pitcairn.The fire was reported about 2:20 a.m. today in one residence and spread to two others.Everybody in the homes got out safely and there were no reports of injuries to firefighters from at least four companies called to battle the blaze.The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
