Slippery Rock girls basketball beats Oil City to make District 10 semifinals: Roundup
It was a close one throughout, and Slippery Rock struggled to score points in the second half, but the Rockets are heading to the District 10 Class 4A semifinals regardless.
Jeff Steele’s bunch beat Oil City 38-36 in Saturday’s quarterfinal game at Grove City High School, getting a game-high 17 points from Brielle Jordan. All of those game in the first half, as Slippery Rock built a 29-24 advantage.
But its defense also made up for the second-half offensive struggles, holding the Oilers to just 12 points after intermission.
Madison Romanovich added 10 points, eight assists and six rebounds before fouling out. Jordan made three 3-pointers.
Up next is top-seed Fairview in the semifinals Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. Slippery Rock has clinched one of District 9’s four spots in the PIAA tournament.
Zac Turberville won gold in the District 10 Class 2A championships at Sharon High School, beating General McLane’s Peter Sadchikov 4-0 in the 160-pound final to book a trip to next week’s PIAA Class 2A Northwest Regional, back at Sharon.
Aden Shay (152) finished sixth after losing by pin to Cochranton’s Garrett Irwin.
Brendan Eicher (4:25.01 in the 1600 meters), Carter Ekas (22.28 seconds in the 200, 49.81 in the 400) and all three of Butler’s relays captured gold as the Golden Tornado won the team title at Saturday’s TSTCA Western Pa. Indoor Track and Field Team Championships.
The 4x200 team of Logan Ekas, Kevin Shriver, Deacon Simko and Isaac Miller ran a 1:31.33. The 4x400 included Griffin Bauer, Miller, Shriver and Simko and finished in 3:32.58. And the 4x800 (8:11.41) featured Logan Rogers, Mateo Saspe, Alex Motonis and Ethan Thomas.
Each of those winners will compete in the state meet, while Jason Wick will join them in the pole vault after placing fourth with a 13-10.
The girls’top finishers included the 4x200 relay (fifth), Halle Swidzinski (16-6 in the long jump for fifth, third in the pole vault with a 10-1).
Other top Butler County performances included:
- North Catholic: Jack Steineman’s 8:52.39 for gold in the 3K and 4:27.70 for fifth in the mile.
- Seneca Valley: Noah Rieger’s 22.92 for fifth in the 200; Dakari Payne’s 43-11.52 for third in the triple jump and 6-1.5 for fifth in the high jump; and Jordan Monteleone’s 5-3.5 for third in the high jump.
