Hardcourt robbery

Jence Rhoads of Slippery Rock High goes up for a couple of the 27 points she scored Thursday in the Rockets' 68-55 win over Titusville.
Rhoads nets 12 steals in her triple-double to help SR win

SLIPPERY ROCK — Normally, one would get 10 to 20 years for such thievery.

Jence Rhoads was lucky her five-finger discount came under the immunity from prosecution the basketball court provides.

The Slippery Rock Highsenior point guard contributed a triple-double against Titusville Thursday night, picking her opponents' pockets for 12 steals, as well as recording 27 points and 10 assists, in a 68-55 win.

"She's our leader," said Slippery Rock coach Adrienne Orris. "We needed that."

Slippery Rock (8-8 overall, 4-1 in the region) needed it because it has been struggling the last few games.

And Rhoads wasn't about to let those struggles continue on her home floor in front of a rabid partisan crowd.

"We played better on Monday, even though we lost," Rhoads said. "I think we carried over the momentum to this game. Obviously, we shot really, really well."

The schools share the same Rockets nickname, but that was where the similarities ended.

Slippery Rock shot 52 percent from the floor and had a season-high point total. Titusville was 21-of-48 from the field. Slippery Rock committed only 10 turnovers while Titusville had 24.

Titusville (2-13, 1-4) also came into the game struggling to score, but Drew Barnhart helped to solve that problem by netting 22 points to keep Titusville close for most of the game.

"She's been out go-to player all year," said Titusville coach Kyle Krepps. "She's been a little bit streaky, but she was hitting tonight."

But when Titusville's starting five were off the floor, Slippery Rock took advantage of their absence.

Titusville led 14-11 late in the first quarter when Krepps put in his five freshmen reserves. Slippery Rock promptly went on a 6-0 run and never trailed again.

Titusville got as close as 25-22 in the second quarter, but Slippery Rock ran its lead to nine at the break.

Slippery Rock started three freshmen against Titusville: guards Karly Rhoads and Kourtney Rhoads and forward SarahCessar.

The other starter was senior Emma Walter, who didn't play basketball last season.

Freshmen Ali Doyle and Adele Campbell also saw significant minutes off the bench, as did sophomore Jenna Rinker.

"We're young. I'm surprised my gray hair hasn't come out yet," Orris said, laughing. "It's been a long road and a learning process. Jence has the leadership and both of us are teaching constantly."
