Eugenia ‘Jean’ Schweikart

Schweikart

Eugenia “Jean” Schweikart, 96, of Concordia at Cabot, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, after a long, courageous battle with heart disease.

Jean was born Dec. 27, 1929, in New Jersey to Stanislaw and Marja Sternik. She was raised in New Jersey and graduated from the College of St. Elizabeth, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1951. She married William Schweikart on Sept. 4, 1954. He tragically passed away suddenly Aug. 3, 1964, leaving Jean a widow for more than 60 years.

After college, Jean worked in the microbiology laboratory at Merck Pharmaceuticals and retired as the laboratory coordinator for the biology department of Union College in New Jersey in 1991. Following her retirement, she moved to Butler to be near her family and she much later relocated to Cabot.

Jean was a lady of many interests, hobbies and talents, excelling at all she did. She was an accomplished artist, primarily as a china porcelain painter, also working in oil and watercolor media. Additionally, she was a talented seamstress, knitter and embroiderer, teaching these pursuits to her daughter and granddaughters. Jean was also a superb gardener, specializing in violets, bonsai and orchids.

Her favorite pastime was the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle, which she always completed by Tuesday of each week. (For those unfamiliar, most never complete a NY Times Sunday crossword …. and she did it without Google!) Watching YouTube videos of painting techniques and playing challenging word games on her iPad were in her words, her “guilty, addicting pleasures.”

Previously, Jean was a member of the Butler Literary Society and the Maridon Museum where she enjoyed playing mahjong and participating in film studies. She also served as treasurer for the Old Stone House Antique Automobile Club and was a member of Butler Kiwanis for many years.

Deeply committed to her Catholic faith, Jean was the founding coordinator of the MOPS group (Mothers of Preschool Students) and manned the dessert table at St. Conrad’s famous fish fry Lenten dinners for many years. She was also a devoted member of the Benedictine Oblates, studiously dedicated to their daily prayers of office for decades. Jean was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Peter Church.

Jean was very proud of her Polish heritage, maintaining her Polish language skills, enjoying traditional foods and continuing many Polish traditions which were passed on to her family. She perhaps considered her greatest accomplishment the times she spent as the “Best Mom-Mom Ever” to her three granddaughters. She cherished the times spent with them sharing sewing lessons, making heart-shaped blueberry pancakes, embroidering countless treasures and creating classy art projects.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Dr. Kathy Schweikart, and son-in-law, Dr. Charles Spingola, of Butler; and three granddaughters, Maggie Spingola (Wellie Fox), of Zelienople, Dr. Liz Spingola (Chandler Raynes), of Alexandria, Va., and Kathryn Spingola (Nick Jackson), of Dormont.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Schweikart; and her brother, Stanley Sternik.

While Jean received myriad blessings in her long, rich life, she also overcame many struggles. She was a gracious, lovely, selfless lady who inspired so many by her faith, resilience, kindness and wisdom. May she enjoy her heavenly reward as she is welcomed to the kingdom with “well done, good and faithful servant.”

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate doctors and caregivers at Butler Hospital and Concordia. Their kindness and expertise is greatly appreciated.
