Enjoy a hike – and some cherry pie – at Jennings
Enjoy a healthy hike and some cherry pie on Saturday, Feb. 21, in honor of George Washington’s 294th birthday, at the Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, Brady Township.
Visitors can choose from nine guided hikes and walks. All are limited in size, so hikers must make a reservation before Feb. 19 to secure a hiking spot. To reserve a spot, go to events.dcnr.pa.gov, then search “Cherry Pie” on the Department of Conservation and Natural Resource’s calendar of events. There is a $5, or $15 per family, cash donation, collected at the park for the hike and the pie.
There are six hikes, which all include the reenactment of the gunshot that could have ended Washington's life when he was 21 years old. Circa 1753-reenactors will also explain period equipment and clothing.
Nature lovers can learn more about the Jennings prairie and park fauna and flora by signing up for a 75-minute nature walk, which are at 9 and 11 a.m.
For those who want more exercise, there is a 7-mile “long hike” led by members of the Butler Chapter of North Country Trail Association and the Butler Outdoors Club. It starts at 9 a.m. at the Lake Arthur boat launch under the Route 528 bridge. It uses a trail that joins Moraine State Park and the Jennings Environmental Education Center.
All hikers are invited to enjoy a piece of cherry pie in honor the 294th birthday of the first president and his 1753 mission.
