Miller Minutes: ‘What we do that shows who we are’

Miller Minutes with Butler Eagle reporter, Molly Miller

Let’s learn to speak the language of love.

Regrettably, I cannot fluently speak any romance language. But that doesn’t stop me from communicating with those I love, especially around Valentine’s Day.

Most approach this holiday in purely a romantic sense. I used to do the same. However, this world could use a little more love right now — we could benefit from selfless neighbors, loyal friends and good Samaritans.

How will we fill that gap our world so desperately needs? By going back to the basics of what “love” was always meant to be. Giving of yourself for the benefit of someone else. Not for recognition, fame or reward. Fulfilling needs where you can, lending a hand or a shoulder. Reminding those around you how much you care, even if they’ve heard it a thousand times.

When people ask me what they should get their significant other for Valentine’s Day, I always respond with “experience.” Let your actions speak louder than your words (or your chocolate-covered strawberries). Take them out on the town, make the scrapbook or a fancy dinner. Either way, it’s what we do that shows who we are.

So, whether you’re trying to woo a lover or reunite with a friend, the time is now. Butler County has plenty of events you can step out to.

Friday

Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church is hosting a Father Daughter Dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the church, 100 W. Main St. in Saxonburg. Tickets are $10 per person, or $25 for a family of three. Please bring a snack to share with the group. Visit the event Facebook page for more information.

Yearn and burn at the Embers and Ashes cabaret in Hobnob Theatre’s studio, 134 S. Main St., at 7:30 p.m. Friday. This fundraiser boasts “pay what you can” tickets to hear the musical talent of Amy Dittman and the Flannery sisters. To purchase tickets, visit hobnobtheatre.com.

Saturday

It’s going to be (a) Hard Day’s Night, a Beatles’ experience, gracing the stage at Penn Theater at 7 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. Hear this incredible tribute for only $50 a ticket. The theater is located at 149 N. Main St. in Butler. For more information, visit thepenntheater.org.
