Penn Township, Center Township projects to receive $1.2 million in funding from red-light grant
Two Butler County infrastructure projects will receive a total of nearly $1.2 million in funding through Automated Red Light Enforcement program grants.
Penn Township will get $626,978 for the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Route 8 and Brownsdale Road. Center Township was awarded $547,056 for the replacement of signal equipment at the intersection of Route 8 and Summit Road.
The grants were announced Tuesday, Feb. 10, by the state Department of Transportation.
Last year, Penn Township worked with neighboring Middlesex Township to submit the grant application, as the intersection is located near the border between the two townships.
“It’s a tough intersection down there. If a traffic light makes it safer, then it’s going to be a great addition,” Penn Township Supervisor Doug Roth said. “I know traffic on Brownsdale Road is going to be increasing because there are some developments in the works.”
The Automated Red Light Enforcement grant program redistributes funds from fines collected on speeding violations at red-light cameras across the state. The two Butler County programs make up a fraction of the grants distributed through this funding round, which total more than $27 million for 51 projects.
“The ARLE program helps municipalities improve traffic flow and safety at intersections, not only for drivers, but for pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users,” PennDOT secretary Mike Carroll said in a news release.
