Concordia expands with recent acquisition
Cabot-based Concordia Lutheran Ministries, a senior residential services provider, is acquiring a York nonprofit through a court-approved bankruptcy auction for $51 million according to a court approved purchase agreement.
Concordia was the successful bidder for SpiriTrust Lutheran. The organization operated six senior life plan communities before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2025, but the closing process requires approval from regulatory authorities, which could take between two to three months.
“We are extremely humbled by the opportunity to have the SpiriTrust Lutheran communities join the Concordia family — it truly is a perfect mission fit,” said Concordia Lutheran Ministries president and CEO Keith Frndak. “These communities have outstanding team members and a really great resident population and we pray that we can build upon the Christian legacy that started there back in 1951. Providing high-quality care and financial stability are two of our main goals at all of our locations and we look forward to serving York, Franklin and Adams counties for many years to come.”
The SpiriTrust acquisition is one of the biggest for Concordia in its 145-year history after being formed in 1881 by a group of Lutheran pastors.
Since 2009, 10 senior care facilities and a number of home health and hospice care agencies have joined Concordia to become a “Christian consolidator” in the industry, such as Concordia’s acquisition of Bethlen Communities of Ligonier in 2023.
SpiriTrust Lutheran provides residential living, assisted living, personal care, memory support and nursing and rehabilitation services for about 1,050 residents across six life plan communities and employs more than 600 team members.
“This transition represents a hopeful and meaningful new chapter for SpiriTrust Lutheran,” said Melissa Frownfelter, interim president and CEO/COO of SpiriTrust Lutheran. “Concordia Lutheran Ministries shares our deep commitment to faith-based service, compassionate care and long-term stability and we are confident that our residents, families and team members will continue to be supported and strengthened as this legacy moves forward. We are grateful for the prayers, dedication and trust of all who have been part of the SpiriTrust Lutheran mission for more than seven decades.”
The six continuing-care communities that Concordia is acquiring in the deal include The Village at Gettysburg in Gettysburg; The Village at Kelly Drive in York; The Village at Luther Ridge in Chambersburg; The Village at Shrewsbury in Shrewsbury; The Village at Sprenkle Drive in York and The Village at Utz Terrace in Hanover.
Concordia operates senior living units in Western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. With its main Cabot campus, Concordia has 748 apartments and other units and services for the elderly.
