Moniteau girls basketball pounces on Redbank Valley; Seneca Valley’s Zach Hill closes in on 100 wins: Roundup
Four Warriors cracked double figures, and Sayge Brunst nearly finished with a double-double in Moniteau girls basketball’s 55-48 win Saturday against Redbank Valley.
Brunst scored 11 points on three 3-pointers and snagged nine rebounds, while Maddy Eury had a game-high 16 points. Charlotte Thompson and Alyssa Thompson each had 10 points, with the former adding eight boards.
Karns City 47, Keystone 33 — Naomi Venesky scored a game-high 17 points to power the Gremlins to another win. Hanna Dailey poured in 12, and Alivia Farren chipped in nine points.
North Catholic 53, Norwin 49 — Brady Wehner led the Trojanettes with 15 points, Sam Weir dropped 14 (on four 3-pointers) and Lauren Reitz added 11 in a non-section win.
Baldwin 60, Mars 52 — Ben Detisch led the Planets with 18 points, and Brady Brennan added 11 in the loss.
Riley Smith pinned Wheeling Park (W.Va.) 106-pounder in 2:29 to win first in his weight class, leading Seneca Valley to third at the Frank Ferguson Brooke Classic at Brook High School, W.Va.
Mars’ Parker Joseph (132) and Olympic Serrao (138) also won golds by technical fall and major decision, respectively. And North Catholic’s Michael Pierro (120) beat SV’s Jaxon Cairns by major decision for the title.
Four other Raiders reached the finals besides Smith, all settling four second: Cairns, Zach Hill (144), Dean Sauers (157) and Thomas Wuycheck (285). Hill finished 3-1 and now sits three wins away from 100 for his career.
Trojans 126-pounder Victor Wagner was pinned in his final to finish second.
Mars came in fifth and North Catholic finished 10th.
Slippery Rock 26th at Fred Bell Tournament — Senior Zachary Turberville lost the 160-pound final 10-3 to West Mifflin’s Cooper Dietz, earning the Rockets’ lone medal at Grove City High School.
His 2-1 day improved his season record to 28-4 and career wins mark to 118.
