Mars girls soccer gets key section victory; Freeport volleyball, Butler tennis shine

Gracie Dunaway scored a pair of goals as the Mars girls soccer team won a key section matchup against West Allegheny, 4-2, Monday night.

Ellie Coffield and Ava Lewis also scored for the Planets (8-0).

Mackenzie Evers scored two goals for West Allegheny (6-3).

Mars had given up just one goal all season before Monday night.

Karns City's defense allowed just one shot on goal in a 4-0 blanking of Punxsutawney.The effort was led by Kaden Scherer, Chase Beighley, Cole Sherwin and Alex Irvine.Dakota King scored twice for the Gremlins (8-0-1). Owen Collwell scored on a direct kick and Robby Rumbaugh punched in a rebound.

Cassidy Dell tallied 21 assists, 16 service points and seven kills to lead Freeport to a 3-1 win at Mars.Erica Lampus added 18 service points, eight kills and Josie Russo seven kills to the 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20 win.Addie Rusak chipped in eight kills, Grace Beach 20 assists and Sydney Selker five kills.Mars stats were not available.<b>North Allegheny 3, Butler 0 —</b> Taylor Welter had 10 kills and Sophia Lucas added 15 assists, four kills and 12 digs, but the Golden Tornado fell 25-14, 25-16, 25-19.Megan Penrod had 17 digs for the Golden Tornado (1-6), who host Hempfield Tuesday night.<b>Union 3, Oil City 1 —</b> Dominika Logue had 13 kills and Morgan Cumberland 26 assists to lead the Damsels to a 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16 victory.Drew Davis had nine kills and three aces, Hailey Kriebel five kills and Kennedy Vogle 15 digs for Union.

Seneca Valley and Butler both competed in the WPIAL Class 3A team championship at Connoquenessing Country Club Monday afternoon.The Raiders placed fifth out of eight teams with 377 strokes, while the Golden Tornado were sixth with 382.Lihini Ranaweera and Paige Scott both carded a 75 to lead SV and Butler, respectively.Also scoring for the Raiders were Madison Sharek (92), Aana Winland (101) and Ainsley McLane (109).Butler's effort included Landis Ruth (94), Chloe Paulisick (102) and Ainsley Plant (111).Peters Township won the district title with 341 strokes.

Butler's No. 1 doubles team of Cameron Hanratty and Ali Smith won to help the Golden Tornado defeat visiting Seneca Valley, 4-1.The Raiders' lone win came courtesy of Emily Lopez and Kailey McCune at No. 2 doubles.<b>Butler 4, Seneca Valley 1Singles:</b> 1-Teddi Isherwood (B) def.
