After four years and two WPIAL semifinal appearances, Mars head football coach Eric Kasperowicz is returning home.

Kasperowicz is expected to be named the North Hills head coach during Thursday’s school board meeting at North Hills, according to Pittsburgh media reports. He will take over his alma mater in the biggest coaching change of the 2026 high school football offseason.

Kasperowicz and Mars athletic director Zach Stitt did not return requests for comment Tuesday. Mars Area School District had a school board meeting Tuesday night, but Kasperowicz’s departure was not discussed.

The Planets went 30-17 under Kasperowicz after he was hired in 2022, reaching two WPIAL Class 4A semifinals.

Kasperowicz is a North Hills graduate from 1993. He had a WPIAL Hall of Fame career from 1990-93 there, throwing for 5,500 yards and rushing for 1,369 more while snagging 20 interceptions on defense. As a senior, he led the team to WPIAL and state titles with 2,781 yards passing and 14 defensive INTs that year. North Hills won the PIAA title 15-14 thanks to his fourth-down TD pass and two-point conversion late in the game.

A Parade All-American in 1994, he played linebacker at Pittsburgh after that.

Kasperowicz has taught at North Hills for 27 years, according to his LinkedIn bio, and is currently a gifted education teacher.

Mars, led by Sacred Heart commit and Butler Eagle Sweet 16 all-star receiver Gabe Hein, went 8-3 this season before losing to Thomas Jefferson in the district quarterfinals. At times the Planets looked like one of 4A’s best teams in the WPIAL with senior running back Ayden Yocum, a veteran offensive and defensive line, and first-year starting quarterback Colin Yurisinec.

Kasperowicz previously coached from 2013 to 2020 at Pine-Richland, winning district titles in 2014, ’17, ’18 and 2020 and two PIAA titles (2017, ’20) while going 85-18. He was let go after the 2020 season following allegations of hazing and bullying in the program, which he denied.

His son, Eric Kasperowicz Jr., finished his freshman season in the fall at John Carroll University after a standout career with the Planets.
