Freeport girls basketball fends off Knoch; Seneca Valley stifles Pine-Richland to take section lead: Roundup

Nia Disanti scored 12 points and Maggie Congor 10 as Freeport girls basketball held off an impressive effort from one-win Knoch 44-38 Monday night.

The Knights’ Neah Ewing scored 14 points off three 3-pointers, and Aubrey Spencer added 10.

The Yellowjackets improved to 9-6 (4-3 WPIAL Section 1-4A) to stay locked in fourth in their section.

Karns City 54, Forest Area 10 — Naomi Venesky had one of the best games of her career, scoring 30 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the foul line to lead Karns City in a rout.

The senior did all of her damage before sitting the entire fourth quarter. Hannah Dailey had seven points and Audrey Heginbotham six for the Gremlins.

Seneca Valley 41, Pine-Richland 28 — Reece McFadden and Natalie Hambly combined to outscore the Rams on their own with 15 points apiece.

The win handed the Rams their first WPIAL Section 1-6A loss of the year and vaulted the Raiders (8-5, 5-0) into sole possession of first.

Slippery Rock 55, Sharon 28 — Madison Romanovich tied Sharon in points with 28 on her own while adding six rebounds and four steals in the Rockets’ blowout win.

Brielle Jordan went for 17 points, eight steals and four assists.

Chartiers Valley 51, Mars 38 — Alexis Cashdollar led the Planets (5-9, 2-5 Section 3-5A) with 21 points, as the team reached double digits in a quarter only once, in the third quarter.

North Catholic 57, Derry 7 — The Trojanettes (10-3, 6-1 Section 1-4A) held the home team scoreless in the first quarter and rolled behind Brady Wehner’s 12 points and Lauren Reitz’s 10.

Boys basketball

Dawson Cook scored a game-high 17 points, sinking four treys while adding four assists, as Moniteau pounced on Portersville Christian 68-37 Monday.

Andrew Zepeda added 12 points and four dimes for the Warriors, who drained nine from distance. Brendin Sankey had nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Chartiers Valley 87, Mars 71 — The Colts completed the doubleheader sweep of the Planets thanks to Federico’s game-high 32 points.

Austen Wroblewski led Mars with 21 points, followed by Ben Detisch (19) and Ethan Kresinski (17).

Hockey

Ace Klingensmith’s empty-net goal late in the third period gave Greensburg Salem a 4-3 win over Butler at Frozen Pond Arena.

Aden Devore scored the Golden Tornado’s first and third goals, the former on the power play and the latter coming 16 seconds after Klingensmith’s. Anthony Trombatt scored a short-handed Butler goal to tie things up early in the third period.
