Slippery Rock’s Romanovich drops 23 in win; Mars’ Passarelli beats Knoch’s Layhew in clash of top middleweights: Roundup

One game after reaching 1,000 career points, Madison Romanovich had 23 points, six rebounds, six steals and three assists as Slippery Rock downed New Castle 54-23 in girls basketball action Wednesday night.

Brielle Jordan added nine points and Vanessa Hinkle another eight for the Rockets, who improve to 8-3 with the win.

Moniteau 54, Keystone 40 — Alyssa Thompson led the Warriors with 12 points, while Emily Matz added 10 and Sayge Brunst nine. Thompson and Matz added six rebounds each.

Clarion-Limestone 44, Karns City 41 — The Gremlins entered the fourth quarter with a 36-35 lead, but fell short in this loss. Naomi Venesky had 18 points and Hanna Dailey added another 12. They were the only Karns City players to score in the final eight minutes.

Cranberry 62, Union/A-C Valley 32 — The Falcon Knights fell to 4-5 (1-4 in KSAC play), though Maddy Dehart had 15 points and three boards.

Boys basketball

Karns City’s boys basketball team had no shortage of offensive firepower Wednesday night, as Owen Kaufman bucketed 21 points, Cole Johnston 17, Josh Peters 11 and Bryce Galan 10, downing Clarion-Limestone 65-54.

Boys wrestling

Mars sophomore Samuel Passarelli earned the night’s biggest win in a dual-meet with Knoch, beating Knights senior and program wins record-holder Owen Layhew 4-2 in a clash at 145 pounds as the Planets rolled 48-21.

The loss holds Layhew at 93 wins as he seeks to become Knoch’s first 100-win wrestler.

Mars’ Rain Moran, Beckett Szczesniak, Benjamin Goehring, Parker Joseph, Liam Corcoran and Phoenix Ross all won by pins, with Ross’ coming in just 13 seconds.

Knoch’s Declan Krepp, Brayden McGowan and Keegan Orris also won by pin.

Bowling

Max Palmiero rolled a 519 series and Chase Stamper and Gus Coffield both had 223 games as Mars’ boys downed visiting Freeport 7-0.

Freeport (girls) 7, Mars 0 — The Yellowjackets were unopposed in the win. Hannah Windows had a 662 series and a 254 game.
