SRU adding 7 Hall of Fame inductees

SLIPPERY ROCK — Seven new inductees will join the Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of Fame Sept. 28.

The 2013 induction class — comprised of Rick Allen, Louis Hanna, Cheryl Levick, Fred Lucas, Robert Peterson, Steve Rihel and Lucy Sack — will be honored at halftime of The Rock's 6 p.m. football game vs. Mercyhurst that day at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The inductees will also be honored at a 2:30 p.m. dinner that afternoon. Tickets for the Hall of Fame dinner are $40 each. All reservations must be made online at www.rockalumnicafe.com/halloffame.

Here is a synopsis of this year's inductees, SRU graduating class in parentheses:

• Steve Rihel (1997) was a four-time All-PSAC performer and SRU's first-ever NCAA Division II track and field national champion in the javelin. He is a Grove City High School graduate and lives in Grove City today.

• Robert Peterson (1961) earned All-America honors in swimming and lettered four years in track and field before starting a career as a Navy SEAL and intelligence officer. He is a New Castle graduate.

• Rick Allen (1983) was a three-year starter on Rock football teams coached by Bob DiSpirito, Fred Goldsmith and Don Ault. He earned small college All-America honors as a senior.

• Louis Hanna (1940) earned All-America honors as a halfback on The Rock's unbeaten, untied team of 1939. He later served more than 40 years as a high school football coach and athletic director at Corry before passing away in 1983.

• Fred Lucas (1965) earned All-America honors in 1963 and was a two-time PSAC individual cross country champion who led The Rock to three conference team titles. He is a Slippery Rock native and graduate of Slippery Rock High School who now lives in Pittsburgh.

• Cheryl Levick served five years as a Rock women's gymnastics coach and athletic administrator before moving on to NCAA and Pacific 10 Conference offices. She is currently athletic director at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

• Lucy Sack (1967) served as women's gymnastics coach, physical education faculty member and chairs of the University's PE and dance departments during an SRU career that covered 33 years. She is a Slippery Rock High School graduate and lives in Grove City.
