Although the crowd of about 500 was smaller than event organizers had hoped for the 2008 Silvester, those who braved the blowing snow and below-freezing temperatures enjoyed the German food, music and atmosphere.

“It’s cold, but we’re still having fun,” said Stephanie Gohlsch, 16, of Cranberry Township.

She was in Harmony celebrating with Austin Green, 17, of Sewickley, Allegheny County, and her family. Thomas Gohlsch, Stephanie’s father, is from Leverkusen, Germany.

Stephanie said the family attended the previous year’s inaugural event and returned this year for the German traditions and food.

Borough Councilman Gary Habsburg said the cold and snow were deterrents for visitors, but he said the event was still a success.

“The good thing is people are going into the shops,” he said.
