4 Raiders claim crowns
FOX CHAPEL — Just another day at the office for Seneca Valley.
The Raiders produced four champions and three runner-ups at the Section 3AAA Wrestling Championships Saturday at Fox Chapel High School.
Champions were Dylan Chappell at 106 pounds, Alejandro Herrera-Rondon at 113, Antonio Amelio at 145 and Nick Montalbano at 152. Placing second were Jason Geyer at 132, Drew Vlasnik at 138 and Patrick Johnson at 182.
“All in all, a pretty good day,” SV coach Kevin Wildrick said. “We got 10 kids through (to the WPIAL tournament) and that's a pretty healthy total.”
The top five placers in each weight class advance to this weekend's WPIAL Championships. Butler got nine wrestlers through, Mars five and Knoch two.
The Planets' Jake Richardson claimed a section crown at 152 pounds.
Chappell and Herrera-Rondon are often times wrestling partners in the practice room at Seneca Valley.
“It can get pretty chippy between us at times in there,” Herrera-Rondon said. “We definitely push each other.
“We have other wrestling partners on the team, too. We'd get sick of each other otherwise.”
Herrera-Rondon won his second straight section title and is 86-9 over two seasons. He pinned both of his opponents Saturday, the first in 47 seconds.
“This is just a step in the process to get to where I want to be — competing for a WPIAL and state championship.” Herrera-Rondon said
Chappell won his first section crown. He placed third last year.
“I've gotten so much better by going up against Alejandro,” Chappell said. “We get after each other.”
At times, almost too much. But that's fine with Wildrick.
“If you don't almost wind up in a fight during practice, you're probably not practicing hard enough,” the coach said.
Amelio put together a dominant performance at 145, winning twice by fall before claiming a 5-0 decision in the title match.
“I was second at 132 last year,” he said. “We have a great team and seeing the other guys win ... We just feed off each other's success.”
Montalbano, a senior, won his first section title after placing second each of the past two years. He upended top-seed Cole Spencer of Pine-Richland, 2-1, in the finals by scoring a reversal with12 seconds left in the match.
“It was a leg move that we practice all the time,” Montalbano said. “I like to roll around on the mat and I had to be patient. The opening came and I got it.”
Richardson had to be particularly patient this season. The Mars junior pinned his way through the Saturday's tournament after suffering a torn labrum at a wrestling tourney Memorial Day weekend of last year.
He had surgery on the shoulder in June.
“There was a whole lot of rehab, rotator cuff work and other things,” Richardson said. “I got cleared to wrestle in November, but came back too soon and aggravated it.
“My shoulder's still not 100 percent. It pops out every now and again, then it pops back in. It's something I have to put up with.”
The Planets' Noah Hunkele placed second at 113, losing to Herrera-Rondon. Anthony Mauire at 120, Christian Scheller at 132 and Sean McElhinney at 170 also advanced for Mars.
Butler had no wrestler reach the championship finals. Jack Codispot at 160, Cooper Baxter at 170, Noah Hartung at 195 and Shawndell Zapata at 220 all placed third.
Jake Pomykata, Nate McMaster and Steven Green placed fourth for Butler while Nick Schaukowitsch and Nate Cornibe were fifth.
“Jack was our best shot at reaching the finals, but he lost to the Indiana kid (Dylan McAnulty) who he beat earlier in the year,” Butler coach Scott Stoner said. “I'm not disappointed in Jack, but I'm disappointed for him.”
McAnulty decisioned Codispot, 11-4, in the semifinals.
“A number of our kids battled through today,” Stoner said. “Cooper wrestled well and Shawndell and Caleb are really coming on.”
Knoch advanced two wrestlers in Guy Deleonardis (third at 152) and Eli Reese (third at 285).
Seneca Valley's Wildrick and assistant coach Joe Montalbano were named Section 3AAA Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year after the meet.
