Gavin Tola, Carson Kane jumpstart Freeport boys basketball in win vs Moniteau at holiday tournament

CHERRY TWP — Gavin Tola blamed a long bus ride. Freeport coach Rich Macura said it was because his team was simply “getting outworked.”

Whatever caused the slow start on the road against Moniteau on Tuesday night, the Yellowjackets washed it away by the time the second half got underway in a 60-52 boys hoops win at the Moniteau Holiday Tournament.

Freeport (4-5) didn’t sink a shot until 3:40 into the game and trailed for the entire first half. Tola, a junior, was the only ’Jackets player to get on the scoreboard in the initial frame. His team went 2 for 13 (15.3%) from the floor during the opening eight minutes.

Out of halftime, Tola and senior Carson Kane helped Freeport go on a 13-2 run to overcome a nine-point hole — the largest of the night — and take a 34-32 advantage. The lead changed twice more before the teams entered the final frame knotted at 42.

“We really worked on sharing the ball,” Tola said. “Making each other get open, cuts, backdoors, everything. ... We knew we had to work really hard to come back.”

Kane, Bryson Paga and Danny King powered a 9-0 surge to start the fourth, going up for good with the help of a frenzied defense.

“I think the big thing on defense is once you get a steal, it kinda becomes contagious,” Macura said. “Everyone’s energy picks up, and then good things just happen.”

Kane led the ’Jackets with 18 points, while Tola added 17. Dawson Cook and Brendin Sankey both bucketed 14 for the Warriors (3-4).
