Penguins roll dice, trade for Blue Jackets F Yegor Chinakhov in exchange for 2 draft picks
The Pittsburgh Penguins are taking a flyer on a former top draft pick, hoping a change of scenary will unlock forward Yegor Chinakhov’s full potential.
The Penguins, who have lost nine of their last 11, acquired the former 2020 first-round pick from Columbus Monday afternoon in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick, 2027 third-rounder and depth forward Danton Heinen, according to media reports. The two picks were owned by St. Louis and Washington, respectively.
Chinakhov requested a trade in the offseason, and it was believed to be only a matter of time until he would be dealt. The Penguins, instead of getting a jump on selling before the trade deadline, are bringing in another young piece with upside but a frustrating history in the NHL so far.
The 24-year-old has six points in 29 games this season and has played on every line and been a healthy scratch at times. His best year was 2023-24, when he had 16 goals and 13 assists in 53 games.
