Across Butler County, Christmas lights can tell stories of family and tradition, and celebrating the holidays in years past. They can also just be fun, like in the case of the light display at Stephanie Huffman’s parents’ household on Young Avenue, which includes inflatable minions next to Santa.

As residents stare down early sunsets and cold winter nights, these brightly lit homes spread Christmas spirit through their extravagant light displays.

Here’s where a few of these displays can be found.

Musical display in Center Township

Mike Guidotti decorated 327 Chestnut Drive, Center Township, with lights synchronized to music for the past several years.

The musical display features lights synchronized to six different songs and effects by Orchestra of Lights.

“I’ve always liked to have something up for the holidays,” Guidotti said. “I can remember when I was a little kid, we’d go across Jefferson street and we’d see these houses lit up back in the ‘80s. I always liked that.”

The Guidotti display includes four trees, a Govee curtain light displaying several images from The Grinch, a 15' tall inflatable snowman, Santa and a countdown to Christmas sign.

“We’ve had a nice little system going to keep it running. I like the joy it brings,” Guidotti said.

Jon and Karlie Harper have run a “computer controlled display” of lights, with broadcast music synchronized to the flashing patterns at 283 Evans City Road, Butler Township.

They’ve had this same display in multiple cities they’ve called home, and since they now call Butler home, the duo said they want to share the holiday spirit with their neighbors.

“We started doing this back in 2016. We’ve moved all over. We’re a military family,” Jon Harper said.

This is the third location they’ve decorated with their holiday display.

“There’s so much enjoyment going around with the lights,” Jon Harper said.

Tradition lights up Chicora caboose

Debbie Macurak, a Butler Realtor, said every holiday season, her mother, Connie Collier, decorates a caboose located in the backyard of her Pine Ridge Drive home in Chicora in honor of her late father.

Macurak’s father passed away in 2012, but her 76-year-old mom still decorates it

“She lights it up for the first time of the season on my Dad's birthday,” Macurak said.

The light display turns on Dec. 3 and lights up nightly through the end of December.

Macurak recalls seeing a Santa and sleigh atop the caboose as a child, and while her mother doesn’t go to that extent, Macurak said the display is worth seeing.

Jody Walborn, a Chicora resident, said her family has put a lot of time into Christmas decorations over the years thanks to the family’s grandfather’s passion for spreading Christmas cheer. Submitted photo

Jody Walborn said her family has put a lot of time into Christmas decorations at 652 Center Drive, Oakland Township.

Their passion for spreading holiday cheer can be seen for generations.

“My son, Jim, gets his love of decorating from his grandfather, Jack,” Walborn said. “He passed away, but was in the Butler Eagle a couple of times for his Christmas lights on Brown Avenue.

“He left with his family the love of decorating for Christmas.”

Walborn enjoys people stopping and staring with wonder at her lights.
